At the Institute of Yoga Sports Science® we bridge the gap between yoga and sport and equip yoga professionals to confidently teach sports-specific and evidence-based yoga to athletes and active people of all ages and abilities, as well as to the general public.
We consider everyone an athlete in their own life: from elite professionals, to everyday movers.
Teaching Grounded in Yoga Biomechanics
Our approach is functional, biomechanical, and athlete-centred.
We prepare our students to work with people of any age and ability through a practical application of movement science. The foundation of our teaching is rooted in biomechanical principles that empower yoga professionals to adapt and apply yoga to any setting.
When teachers understand anatomy and biomechanics, yoga sequencing becomes creative, experimental, and intentional. It moves beyond set routines into intelligent, tailored practice.
We Prove Yoga Works
For over a decade, students training with us as Advanced Yoga Sports Coaches have undertaken case study research projects, contributing to a growing body of evidence that yoga can:
- improve athletic performance
- support injury prevention
- enhance recovery and longevity in sport
Each case study is archived within our YSS Research Index, creating one of the largest research databases in the world on the efficacy of yoga in sport.

The Missing Link in Athletic Training
We use a proven, scientifically informed methodology, developed over more than twenty years, to bridge the gap between yoga and sport.
Where our training differs from many traditional forms of yoga is in its focus on:
- a modern, evidence-based approach to yoga
- a clear understanding of the specific demands placed on the modern athlete
- translating that knowledge into practical, accessible sequencing for real bodies
Our Motto: Less Is More
Most athletes and active people manage demanding schedules and high levels of stress. Many are overtrained and under-recovered.
Our methods are built around the principle of “less is more”:
- Simple, targeted movements instead of overwhelming complexity
- Time and space for awareness, recovery, and integration
- Sessions that feel different from traditional training and create room for both performance and restoration
This approach offers athletes and everyday movers an entirely different training experience, one that supports both physical performance and a deeper awareness of self.

The Institute of Yoga Sports Science® is a registered school with Yoga Alliance and has provided in-service training days and short courses to the British Wheel of Yoga.
Members of the senior teaching faculty are based internationally, reflecting the global reach of our work.
